Ponies in the Community

Many people we are sure will be familiar with Pets as Therapy , the organisation that uses dogs and cats to visit people in hospitals, homes etc

WELL!

REMUS  SANCTUARY has taken this a step further with our enterprising prgramme

ponies in the community

We have done many visits to date and all have been well received and highly successful, we normally take the two small Shetlands Rosie and Ted but hope to expand the scheme and take more of the ponies and perhaps Harvey Donkey in the future.

The visits are as much a tonic for those of us taking the ponies out to do the visits as the people we are visiting, the joy on peoples faces,  who are in many cases not able to have animals any longer, they remember their animals and talk avidly to us about them, this is wonderful therapy for all concerned.  At one home we visited we were told later that the residents did not venture into the garden, but with the arrival of Rosie and Ted they all came out  and had a wonderful afternoon.

We would like to do more visits, if anyone knows of a Hospital, Residential home or School where you think a visit would be appreciated then please do get in touch with them and us and we Rosie and Ted will be happy to oblige.

We have been amazed since starting the scheme at the way the ponies have been welcomed on our various visits, no one witnessing the reaction of often sick and elderly people or  children who do not normally have the opportunity to see large animals (well in Rosie and Teds case – not very large) could possibly doubt the value of this work, it is not about raising money it is about bringing happiness to  people less fortunate often than ourselves, we are very proud of this scheme and would welcome more invitations from organisations who think that their residents, children etc would enjoy an afternoon in “the company of animals”.
