HOLISTIC CARE
With many of our horses being so old and with so many health considerations we believe in giving them a range of treatments to compliment the work that our specialised Veterinary Surgeons do with them.
The particular treatments that we use here are:
Essential Oils & aromatherapy with the assistance of Dena Schwartz
Shiatsu by Kate Granger
Bach flower remedies with the assistance of Jill Wood
Osteopathy by Jonathan Cohen BSc(Hons). Ost PG Dip An Ost
Self Selection Herbs – we have a range of 14 different herbs that we regularly offer the animals and they choose what they require. In the wild horses would graze large areas of land picking from hedgerows at what they needed at different times of the year but since the war this Country has been ripping out its hedgerows and we have enclosed many horses into bare fields surrounded only by fencing and so we have taken that choice away from them. The self-selection method is about giving them that choice back. It works as the horses will take only what they need. The horses at REMUS who live in the Laminitic Barn who are on high levels of medication always choose the cleansing herbs as if they are trying to cleanse their systems of the chemicals we are putting into them. When ROWAN was bleeding internally following the birth of her foal which was too big for her she could not get enough yarrow oil. No matter how much we gave her it was not enough. Yarrow is renowned for aiding the stopping of bleeding. Since ROWAN stopped bleeding so did her desire for Yarrow. Now she won’t touch it.
The herbs that we regularly offer our animals are:
- Peppermint
- Marigold
- Nettle
- Cleavers
- Rosehip
- Dandelion
- Meadowsweet
- Milk thistle
- Sea weed
- Agnus castus
- Hawthorn
- Chamomile
- Echinacea
- Red Clover
SHIATSU. Horses like KARAZELLA, POPPETT, FANTA, RHANI & DAISY really benefit from this treatment and get quite visibly annoyed if Kate visits for treatments and does not include them. Shiatsu is an ancient form of oriental medicine – a hands on treatment using varying amounts of pressure on the body’s meridians, or energy channels, to bring about beneficial effects.
Both Kate and Dena do regular workshops here at REMUS. For more information check out our web site.
These workshops are informative and fun and are great because that knowledge can be used to help your own animals. Most of the Volunteers at REMUS have attended the Workshops and now use that experience and knowledge to work directly with the animals here helping to improve their quality of life.
INDULGENCE DAY
Every July Dena Schwartz organises an Indulgence Day here. Therapists from across the South East give up their time to come along for the day to offer treatments to people and demonstrations in the Laminitic Barn on our horses.
2007 saw therapists offering treatments as diverse as aromatherapy, massage, Indian head massage, Thai massage, reflexology, healing, acupressure, shiatsu, magnatherapy etc
All monies raised come directly to the Sanctuary the benefits to the animals are enormous. If like we used to, you doubt the good of these therapies then do come along next July to see for yourself. Animals do not lie and show quite clearly what they think and how they benefit. Come along and see our expert practitioners in action.
In 2008 the Indulgence day is on Sunday 20th July. We look forward to seeing you there!
