We are proud to announce the launch of our ground breaking Elderly Horse Awareness Campaign.
The aim of this Campaign is to heighten awareness to the help that can be given to horses in their latter years, horses are living longer and our campaign has been borne out of our long experience in dealing with an older generation of horses. Many an old horse is apparently acceptably underweight because it is old – this is totally avoidable with the correct diet, veterinary, farrier and holistic care there is no reason this should be the case. Our aim is to reach the widest possible audience, to educate in the care and maintenance and to encourage owners by showing through information, available in the form of our REHAC information pack, online help and also through our own example that their much loved old horse can live a happy and healthy life far beyond expectations.
We wish to openly challenge the age-old adage that ‘old horse equals skinny horse’
The horses and ponies at REMUS are very much an older population of horses with most being over 30 and BUTTONS shown here being in her mid 50’s!!!
The need for this campaign was borne out of the suffering of PRINCE. A much loved pony left to die of starvation due to his owner’s ignorance of his needs. Whilst his owner was watching him eat she was not noticing that the food was being quidded back out again and slowly he starved to death.
As horses age they are more prone to colic, arthritis, Cushing’s Disease, low immune systems, poor dentition and much more. There is much we can do to help them cope with these problems.
In March the Sanctuary launched the Elderly Horse AwarenessCampaign at Ingatestone Hall with kind permission of Lord & Lady Petre. The Hall was full to capacity and presentations were given on the following topics:-

The Campaign has been endorsed by JENNY PITMAN OBE who said:-
 |
“It is essential to raise awareness regarding the care of elderly horses and ponies to ensure that these faithful servants get the very best care and attention in their old age” |
ROY BARRACLOUGH MBE. Actor, who said :-

“It is often said that we are a nation of animal lovers –well, sometimes when you hear of animals being neglected, like poor Remus, you seriously doubt it. I’m pleased to have been involved with a number of animal charities – all, like the Remus memorial Horse Sanctuary, doing sterling work that begins to restore ones faith in humanity. In many species – dogs, donkeys, horses and so on, you often find sadly, that the older animals are those more likely to be forgotten and I’m thrilled to learn therefore of a charity doing something positive to help the older horse” |
Dena SCHWARTZ MICHT.ISAAP www.animalaromatherapy.co.uk
“A great campaign helping to raise awareness for the health, happiness and longevity of equines through their senior years”.
CECI MORLEY Med.MRCVS. Hillpark Vet. Group
“The campaign will raise awareness of the different needs and requirements for general management and special disease control of the elderly horse. More knowledge is needed for horse owners and yard managers about the care of older horses”.
DEBBIE GREEN. COSMAS Organics
“We find the work we have seen with the Golden Oldies at Remus inspiring. Our horses depend on us to learn and understand all we can to support them so they become contented seniors. So encouraging to see a Seminar on this often neglected subject”
MARK SINNOTT.MA.VetMB.CertVR.MRCVS Pegasus Veterinary Surgery
“I am proud to have been the Vet for Remus Horse Sanctuary for the past 18 years. They have always provided good care for their old horses and ponies and this is shown in the good ages the animals are able to live to. I support the Sanctuary’s Elderly Horse Campaign as I believe it is important that elderly horses receive the very best care that their owners can provide”.
EMMA PELLY. Marketing Manager. Dengie Horse Feeds.
“As an owner of a 30 year old horse myself. I am very much aware of how ensuring old horses get the correct diet and management can keep them healthier and happier well into their late 20’s and beyond. My old horse is still enjoying life to the full and giving my other horse the run around, depite his advancing years! Dengie is proud to help Remus in their campaign to help owners on how to look after their ‘golden oldies’ so that they and you can enjoy each other for longer. Dengie can help you to achieve this with our range of products formulated for older horses”.
ROBERT A EUSTACE. Director of the Lamintis Trust and the Laminitis Clinic
“Old horses, ponies and donkeys require particular care. Their needs with regard to feeding, dentistry, Cushing’s Disease and chronic founder require regular, sympathetic treatments. Specialised knowledge and technical expertise must form the basis for these treatments. If we keep old animals, it is our duty to provide for them properly”
ROBIN WELLS MRCVS (Berkshire)
“I believe, as a specialist equine vet that the older horse deserves proper husbandry, care and veterinary attention. It is upsetting to see horses which are considered no longer fit for the purpose they were purchased, neglected. I therefore offer my support to the Elderly Horse Awareness Campaign”.
DEBEN VALLEY EQUINE CLINIC. Framsden, Suffolk
“We are fortunate to have numerous veteran horses under our care and are pleased to assist our clients in providing the top care they deserve, including dentistry, feed and exercise, advice, treatment for arthritis and Cushing’s. We support this Campaign because we know retired horses need more than just a field”.
A very worthwhile & much needed Campaign aimed at educating the horse owner as to the needs of the compromised older horse, pony or donkey.
