THE PLIGHT OF THE DEALER HORSE

The last 15/20 years have seen an explosion in the amount of dealer/traveller horses allowed to graze in the Country. These horses are NOT pets and as such not cared for in an acceptable manner. They are an extra financial sideline for these people.

They are grazed illegally, they often stray and are often lacking in basic care. Also over the same amount of years, public concern has focused on the horses. In some areas these owners wield such power and will blatantly defy Authorities.

Travellers, gypsy and dealer horses have been a problem for many years. Contrary to popular belief these horses are not dumped -they are all owned. These horses invariably never have a Vet or farrier. They are often put into foal at 2yrs old and are bred from every year until they die. Each foal is sold off as it gets older, usually with fillies fetching anything up to £1000 and colts £300 - £500. In their lifetime each mare will earn its greedy owner at least £15,000.

They invariably graze illegally and so the owner incurs very little expense. It is very big business and if some of the horses die on the way, who cares? Every business has its losses. These horses are usually crawling with lice and infested with worms. It must be remembered that worms are the biggest cause of death in horses. The worms will make them anaemic, lethargic and cause lack of condition etc. When born the females will continue life as a breeding machine and the colts will be sold off, usually at Southall Market, where inevitably they end up as meat.

IT IS UNBELIEVABLE THAT IN THIS NEW INTERNET BASED, HIGH FLYING, TECHNOLOGICAL MILLENIUM AGE, THAT WE CAN STILL ALLOW HORSES TO STAND CHAINED IN FIELDS, WITHOUT ACCESS TO SHELTER, FOOD OR WATER. THAT HORSES CAN BE ALLOWED TO ROAM LOOSE ON BUSY MAIN ROADS, IN SHOPPING AREAS AND HOSPITALS AND CAN BE ALLOWED TO SUFFER AND DIE WITHOUT OUR SO CALLED CARING SOCIETY DOING ANYTHING TO STOP IT.
