Welcome to The Remus Memorial Horse Sanctuary Web site.
**URGENT APPEAL PLEASE HELP**
CAN YOU GIVE A HORSE A CHANCE?
The winter is upon us and already
we have been beset with flooding and every time it floods our
fencing suffers substantial damage – sometimes whole
stretches of fence are dragged into the River.
We are inundated with animals this year and are
full to bursting – and yet there are still so many out there
needing our help. We are receiving an unprecedented number of
calls from people concerned re horses in distress and need.
It is also our most expensive time of the year
where we need to use more bedding and food and with all the
extra mouths to feed this is putting considerable strain on
our otherwise reduced funds.
The recession has meant a huge drop in income for
us also. Yet the animals still need food, bedding, veterinary
care, farrier care and much more.

These animals have come from such terrible
backgrounds and now they are here our aim is to give them the
very best chance we can. They have spent their lives doing
their best for their owners – only to be cast out when no
longer wanted, many have spent their lives stuck on a
tethering chain, or starved and beaten. Many hungry and
terrified. When they arrive through our gates they are given
one promise – that from now on they will never know hunger,
never experience cruelty or fear and that this is now their
time for them to have the best that we can offer and with
nothing asked of them. This is THEIR time.
Your donation can help us to
change their lives and give a horse a chance!
Please donate now to help the many
animals here at Remus

Founder
REMUS MEMORIAL HORSE SANCTUARY has been so named in memory of the first
horse we rescued. Sadly help came too late for him, but the tragedy
of REMUS dying through wilful neglect provided the spur needed
by the now formed charity to save others from a similar fate.
The
Sanctuary was formed in 1983 following the plight of REMUS , who was starved for up to four months in a field, having
been stolen by a horse dealer. Then he was left tied
to a lamp-post outside the yard that he had been previously stolen
from. But now he was emaciated, a mere shadow of the lovely horse
he had once been.
REMUS
For 13 days he stood without
help. Rescue came in the form of concerned members of
the public and he was taken to a horsebox for transportation to
a Veterinary Hospital. Whilst being loaded, he was frightened by
passing traffic, he stumbled, fell and, too weak to get up, he had
to be pushed and pulled into the horsebox. He traveled lying down. Rescue came too late, his
trauma from the months of depravation resulted in him bleeding internally.
He died the next morning in the company of people who cared.

Mission Statement |
REMUS MEMORIAL HORSE SANCTUARY aims to provide lifetime help and care for horses, ponies, donkeys, goats, sheep, pigs & cows, who are victims of physical and mental abuse, be it as a result of ignorance or malicious intent. The animals are our prime concern and are treated with the utmost respect. Animals are never euthanased for reasons of age or infirmity alone. Nothing is spared to give them every chance to thrive into old age.
