The Sanctuary

Welcome to The Remus Memorial Horse Sanctuary Web site.
If you have visited before you will notice a change in the design and content of our site. The main reason for the changes is that over the past year the site has developed with new pages and photographs, and has become too small to cope with it all. It was thought that the front page should contain up to date news of our Sanctuary. Some pages have yet to be updated, please accept our apologies.

**URGENT APPEAL PLEASE HELP**

REMUS MEMORIAL HORSE SANCTUARY has been so named in memory of the first horse we rescued. Sadly help came too late for him, but the tragedy of REMUS dying through wilful neglect provided the spur needed by the now formed charity to save others from a similar fate.

The Sanctuary was formed in 1983 following the plight of REMUS , who was starved for up to four months in a field, having been stolen by a horse dealer. Then he was left tied to a lamp-post outside the yard that he had been previously stolen from. But now he was emaciated, a mere shadow of the lovely horse he had once been.

REMUS

For 13 days he stood without help. Rescue came in the form of concerned members of the public and he was taken to a horsebox for transportation to a Veterinary Hospital. Whilst being loaded, he was frightened by passing traffic, he stumbled, fell and, too weak to get up, he had to be pushed and pulled into the horsebox. He traveled lying down. Rescue came too late, his trauma from the months of depravation resulted in him bleeding internally. He died the next morning in the company of people who cared. Read Remus's Poem

 Mission Statement

REMUS MEMORIAL HORSE SANCTUARY aims to provide lifetime help and care for horses, ponies, donkeys, goats, sheep, pigs & cows, who are victims of physical and mental abuse, be it as a result of ignorance or malicious intent. The animals are our prime concern and are treated with the utmost respect. Animals are never euthanased for reasons of age or infirmity alone. Nothing is spared to give them every chance to thrive into old age.

 News

Elderly Horse Campaign
We are proud to announce the launch  of our ground breaking Elderly Horse Awareness Campaign.

Holistic Care
With  many of our horses being so old and with so many health considerations we believe in giving them a range of treatments to compliment the work that our specialised Veterinary Surgeons do with them. See also workshops on the right of this page

Feeding the elderly Horse
The winter months mean management changes for many horses and ponies and those in their "senior years" may sometimes need a little extra support to ensure they emerge from winter full of the joys of spring!

dengie

Dengie Supporting Remus
The horses, ponies and donkeys at the sanctuary had an early Christmas present this December when Dengie Horse Feeds made a donation of their Natural Vitality Senior Vits & Mins and Natural Vitality Coat & Hoof feed supplements.
